Alysoune Coleman

The Current Hero of Hope

"Everyone should be involved in something they enjoy," Alysoune says. "Just because you have CF doesn't mean that you have to sit at home and be closed off. I love playing sports, which inspire me and give me a goal to work toward. Sports have helped me understand the importance of my health maintenance routine to my overall health."

Alysoune Coleman

Alysoune Coleman is an active, outgoing 13-year-old from Arizona who enjoys the outdoors and loves athletics. Despite living with the chronic illness cystic fibrosis (CF), Alysoune approaches life with a positive attitude and a smile. Dr. Joan DeCelie-Germana, director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Schneider Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park, New York recently had the opportunity to chat with Alysoune and learn more about this inspirational Hero.

I know you are a really active junior-high student. What are some of the things you like to do?

I am in my third year of running track, and I love it! I run with a track club called the AZ Flames and recently achieved my personal best time in the 800 meter event. I also like to play soccer and tennis and enjoy playing the piano.

How do you balance your busy schedule while still maintaining your health?

Staying on top of my medications is definitely a priority, and I get up early every morning to do my breathing treatments before school. With all my activities, I was having some trouble keeping my weight up. So my doctor had a G-tube put in and that has helped me a lot. I also have diabetes, so I make sure to keep an eye on my blood sugar, especially during sports when it tends to fluctuate.

What motivates you when things get a little tough?

I just tell myself that if do my best every day, that is all that I can do. My attitude can help change how I see the tough stuff in life.

Love in The City

To the East side
The west side
The North side and the South side.
So take me back to Manhattan that dear old dirty town!!

I did it!! I visited the BIG apple after 4 1/2 long years. It is the farthest I have been for a very long time. I love my Ever Go and even tho after I am done packing and my suitcase is 96% medical and I look like I may be part of doctors without borders. Its not that bad.

Everyone in security was so nice and eager to help. When I asked they were happy to put on clean gloves while searching thru my bag. Wearing O2 on the plane wasn't that bad either, of course I got the head tilt but I guess that is to be expected. Did I tell you how much I love my Ever Go well I do and it made the trip worry free. However not sure I am sold on the red eye... I didn't sleep a wink!

Well you all know me and my love for Purell well both flights were full and right when the girl next to me sat down she sneezed 3 times in her hand... EWWWW! After much coercing I got her to use some of my purell. I of course squirted it in her hand for her let's just say she may have gotten a lil more than she wanted ;) Then the lady next to her asked for some which made me happy.

NY was SO hot and SO muggy... The humidity is hard on me I am not sure how some of you in those humid areas do it. Thank goodness for the de humidifier ;) and how lucky am I to have such amazing friends who are always willing to stop and rest and take breaks for their elderly friend ;) They are the very BEST!

My lil guy is 6

Happy Birthday Oscar Love! I love you SO much and am so grateful for you... My lil guy loves to cuddle, snuggle and love his momma. He is such an AMAZING big brother to Lilly and protects her and is always looking out for her. I can't believe he is 6 today. My babies sure are growing up right before my eyes.

I love when Osc knows he is in trouble and he won't look me in the eye and will go hide under my bed until I tell him I love him and he can come out. So then he slowly comes out and showers me with kisses.

Oscar keeps me in line too. He sits by his food dish like clockwork 5:00 rolls around and he know din is around the corner. Love ya lil man Happy Birthday and bones(cheers) to many more ;)

best lil bee I know

1derful indeed!

Another great bday!!!! The 31derful was definitely 1derful!

I woke up at 6am it was very early but I wanted to enjoy the whole day... the babies definitely take after me they are not early risers this is them at 6 am not very happy. I got home from coffee around 11 and they were just getting up. I just love them!

I met some friends for coffee at 9 and when I came home I found mylar balloons all over my house and yard. It was a very fun surprise from my Dad. I only got a couple shots but you get the idea.

Always at 3 on my bday my parents and I go to coffee... I started this tradition about 6 or 7 years ago. We always have a great time.
Makena made me a special bracelet... with my name on it and an assortment of colored beads. I made her one too its are BFF bracelets. I wear it daily along with these other ones that I never take off. The first one says "Love the Life you Live" The second one says "nothing is worth more than this day" then the third one is my cross I got for my bday last year from some friends and the fourth one is my BCF bracelet with Shar, which by the way she gave me quite the tribute on her blog, read that post here. Shar I was truly honored to read this, you are an AMAZING BCF! The Fifth one says Health and then the sixth one is the masterpiece that Makena made.
These were the balloons from the outside of my house
These were the balloons on top of my cake that my mom got me it was a princess Nothing Bundt Cake they are so yummy my favorite is the red velvet which is what my mom got me. YUMMM!! I didn't get any pics of it so I will have to wait to see if anyone else did.
Flowers from Josh & Cath were on my door step when I got home from coffee with my parents.
After coffee with my parents I went to din later on with the fam at one of my favorite places the Porcupine. It was so much fun to just be surrounded by so much love. I am honestly blessed beyond measure. I have the best family and friends in the world! Thank you to everyone who made my bday SO VERY special! I will have to share more highlights as I download the pics.

I can't believe today is June 1st so crazy!
